'My Own City' – The experience of a gendered urban landscape

Mera Apna Shehr
Director: Sameera Jain
English (subtitled), 64 min, 2011, India

The experience of a gendered urban landscape, where the gaze, the voice and the body are at all times under surveillance. What if this multiple surveillance was to be turned upon itself to observe what is contained in the everyday Delhi? The film explores whether there is a sense of belonging, of ownership of the city. Can a woman in the city, as she continuously negotiates the polarities of anxiety and comfort, be free?
